Devil's Bridge National Park

Overview

Overview

Despite its ominous name, Devil's Bridge National Park is a unique must-see, a natural arch carved by the sea out of the soft and hard limestone ledges of the cliffs along Antigua. As enormous breakers from the Atlantic repeatedly hit the rocks throughout the years, the ocean waters eventually eroded away a soft part of limestone to create a bridge-like arch.

This unique natural sight tells a painful story. It's said that enslaved people would hurl themselves off the bridge into the rough waters below, in an attempt to escape their enslavement. The sense that the devil must be present there is how the bridge gained its name. With the wild shrubbery and huge howling waves, there is an almost frighteningly rugged natural beauty to the bridge and its surrounding area. Some guided 4WD tours of Antigua include a stop at the bridge. Catamaran cruises also sail by here.

*Local vendors sell souvenirs and cold drinks and beer near the site.

*Wear good hiking shoes with tread if you plan to explore; the formation can be slippery.

*Swimming is not allowed, and you should not walk on top of the arch.

*Because of its potentially dangerous conditions, the site is not recommended for families with young children.

Devil's Bridge National Park is located on a headland on the eastern end of the land, near Indian Town. It is about 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) southeast of the airport. Parking is available near Devil’s Bridge, in case you’re traveling on your own. It's also within walking distance of the Pineapple Beach Club.

Devil's Bridge is known for its blowholes (a blast of sea water from sea caves), but keep in mind that these blasts can be dangerous, especially on windy days. Overall, high season in Antigua runs from December to April, since these are the driest months. September to November are the wettest (and peak hurricane season), so it may be best to avoid Devil's Bridge then.

Some tours combine a stop at Devil’s Bridge with free time at nearby Long Bay Beach, about 5 minutes from Willikies. This is a popular spot for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling, where swimmers can spot small fish and coral. A bar, restaurant, and souvenir shops are found along the beach, and sun beds and umbrellas are available for rent.
