Republic Square (Prokurative)

Overview

Overview

The heart of Split, the 2nd-largest city in Croatia, and its main gathering place is Prokurative, also known as Republic Square. With architecture inspired heavily by St. Mark’s Square in Venice and easy access to the nearby Riva Promenade, the square is a popular place for concerts, performances, and people-watching.

The Basics
Commissioned in the middle of the 19th century by Mayor Antonio Bajamonti, who was keen to emphasize Split’s ties to Italy, Republic Square’s architecture doesn’t match the rest of the city but nevertheless is beautiful. There are many restaurants, small cafés, and local shops in the area around Republic Square, making it a welcome place to linger.

Small-group and private walking tours of Split, as well as shore excursions and day tours from Dubrovnik, visit Republic Square. Many tours of the square also stop at Diocletian’s Palace, Peristyle Square (Peristil), the Cathedral of St. Duje (also called the Cathedral of St. Domnius, or Katedrala Svetog Duje), the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery (Galerija Meštrović), and more.
