Salvador Dali House—Portlligat (Casa Salvador Dalí—Port Lligat)

Overview

Overview

Situated in the former home and workshop of surrealist painter Salvador Dali, the Salvador Dali House—Portlligat (Casa Salvador Dalí—Port Lligat) showcases the artist’s quirky work and offers a look into his eccentric life. Visitors can explore the house-museum’s maze-like interior, window-framed views, and kitschy decor including everything from mannequins to taxidermy. Outside, you’ll find a surrealist wonderland as well, with curiosities like a funky lip-shaped sofa flanked by giant Pirelli tire signs and an abundance of Dali’s signature giant eggs.

The Basics
The Salvador Dali House near Cadaques is one of three attractions that make up the Salvador Dali Triangle. Due to its location in Portlligat off the public transportation network, most visitors come to the museum on a Dali-themed guided tour from Barcelona, most of which typically include a visit to the popular Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres as well. Pre-purchased tickets grant entrance at a specified time, and during the summer high season, they often sell out in advance.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • The Port Lligat Salvador Dali House-Museum is a must-see for art lovers.
  • Reservations for the museum must be made in advance.
  • Choose to visit the museum independently or on a Dali-themed tour with a stop at the Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres.
  • Due to the architectural characteristics of the house, this museum is not wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There
Cadaques does not have a train station, so the best way to reach the museum independently is to take the train from Barcelona to Figueres and catch a bus or taxi from there. A SARFA bus also runs from Barcelona to Cadaques, dropping passengers off about a 15-minute walk away from the museum.

When to Get There
The town of Cadaques is one of the most beautiful and popular beach destinations on the Costa Brava, and as such, it can get busy during summer (particularly August when Spaniards take their vacation). If possible, book your tickets for one of the first time slots to enjoy the grounds at their quietest.

The Salvador Dali Triangle
The Portlligat Dali House is one point of the Salvador Dali Triangle. To get a comprehensive look at the eccentric artist and his work, plan to visit all three (preferably over the course of two days). The most popular of the three museums is the Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the town where the artist was born. The southernmost point of the triangle is in the town of Pubol, where the surrealist castle Dali built as a private retreat for his wife, Gala, has been converted into a museum.
