Bacina Lakes (Bacinska Jezera)

With turquoise waters surrounded by lush pine forests set against a backdrop of soaring mountains, the Bacina Lakes (Bacinska Jezera) are one of Croatia’s most enchanting hidden wonders. The seven lakes, six of which are interconnected, are off the radar for most tourists, but they provide an idyllic setting for outdoor activities.

The Basics
The Bacina Lakes feature activities for the whole family. Brimming with freshwater fish, the lakes are a prime spot for fishing. Water sports enthusiasts can explore the interconnected lakes by canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard, and families can take a tour of the lake on a traditional wooden boat. Hikers and cyclists will enjoy the lakeside paths that connect the lakes.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • The Bacina Lakes are a haven for nature lovers and anglers.
  • Less crowded than other Dalmatia attractions, Bacina Lakes offers a peaceful reprieve from the coast during peak tourist season.
  • Bring a swimsuit; numerous swimming spots can be found all around the lakes.
  • Book a kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding tour to enjoy the lakes up close.

How to Get There
The Bacina Lakes are located in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, halfway between Split and Dubrovnik, alongside the Adriatic Highway just inland from the port city of Ploče. Most visitors arrive by car on their own, although some private tours from Dubrovnik include transportation to the lakes.

When to Get There
The Bacina Lakes can be visited year-round, but the summer months are best for swimming and water sports such as kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Jogging and cycling around the lakeside paths and bird watching along the shore can be enjoyed anytime of year.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding Bacina Lakes
A stand-up paddleboarding tour is a fun way to experience the Bacina Lakes. After learning the basics, you’ll explore the islands, canals, and swamps of Bacina Lakes while getting in an excellent workout as well. Stand-up paddleboarding is the perfect activity for families with kids.
