Gastown Aikikai was established as a dojo in downtown Vancouver in January 2011 to concentrate on Hombu-style instruction. Though modest in scale, the dojo desires to contribute to a robust future for Aikido in Canada by making additional training available. Gastown Aikikai is committed to cooperating with other dojos and organizations for domestic and international Aikido activities as appropriate in an amiable and timely manner based on the Aikido spirit established by the Founder of Aikido. Members are drawn mainly from word of mouth and through introductions by existing members. Its students include men and women of Dan and Kyu ranks who want to train hard in a fun, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. However, safety in practice is paramount and a top priority for the dojo. Drop-ins are welcome, no matter which style or affiliation you belong to. Classes are generally held for about one and a half hours each Sunday, followed by social time off the mat.
