Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art based in aiki-jujutsu and emphasizes self-defense. Aikido utilizes wrist locks, elbow locks, and throwing techniques using the opponents strength against himself. Aikido is a non-competitive martial art and promotes fitness, self-confidence and discipline. Aikido also teaches the use of staff (jo), and sword (bo-ken). The philosophy of its founder, Morihei Ueshiba, commonly known as O’Sensei, emphasizes non-resistance and circular techniques. The Vancouver Isshinkan Aikido Dojo has an open door policy for new members and visiting aikidoka.
